Bonefish on the Flats
Bimini's shallow sand and turtle grass flats hold year-round bonefish, with early morning sessions producing the most consistent shots in June as midday heat pushes fish into deeper edges.
Tarpon Showing Nearshore
Juvenile and rolling tarpon are appearing in Bimini's nearshore channels through June, making this a realistic add-on to a morning flats session.
Permit in the Channels
As sand flats warm above 84°F, permit are sliding into deeper channel edges where guides are finding them tailing and feeding through the tide change.
Bluewater Minutes Away
The Gulf Stream runs tight to Bimini's west wall, putting mahi, wahoo, and blue marlin within a short run from the dock without burning half a day in transit.
Local knowledge
Bimini sits at the western edge of the Bahamas, roughly fifty miles east of Miami across the Gulf Stream. It is a narrow pair of islands — North and South Bimini — with a compact harbor, walkable waterfront, and direct access to three very different fisheries inside one day. The flats to the east are classic Bahamian bonefishing country: white sand, turtle grass, and clear water shallow enough to pole a skiff in sneakers. The Gulf Stream to the west is one of the most productive bluewater corridors in the Atlantic. That combination, within a two-hour ferry or twenty-minute flight from South Florida, is what sets Bimini apart.
In June, bonefish are present across the flats but require smart timing — Bahamas DMR regulations require catch-and-release for bonefish, which have been fully protected in Bahamian waters since 2009, and barbless hooks are strongly encouraged. Work early morning tides before the sun loads the water and fish turn lock-jawed by midday. Permit are pushing into channels as flats temperatures climb, and tarpon are beginning to show nearshore — both species offer legitimate shots for anglers willing to adjust their schedule around the heat. Bluewater trips run year-round and are not affected by summer conditions on the flats.
On the water
Flats Fishing — Wading and Poling
Guides pole shallow skiffs across sand and grass flats in search of tailing or cruising bonefish, with anglers casting to individual fish at close range.
Permit Fishing
Targeting permit requires presenting crab flies or live crabs precisely to fish spotted in channels or on flat edges, where they feed aggressively during tidal movement.
Tarpon Fishing
Nearshore tarpon are worked with large streamers or live bait along channel edges and mangrove shorelines, requiring heavy tippet and patience for a hookup to stick.
Bluewater and Gulf Stream Fishing
Captains run west to the Gulf Stream to troll or pitch baits for mahi, wahoo, and blue marlin in water that transitions from light blue to deep cobalt within a short run.
Shark Fishing
Lemon, reef, and hammerhead sharks are regularly targeted on light to medium tackle along Bimini's drop-offs and channel mouths, with most released boatside.
