Nassau sits close to the Tongue of the Ocean, a deep-water canyon that concentrates blue marlin, white marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. Runs to productive water are typically under 30 minutes.
Reef and Bottom Fishing
Nassau's surrounding reefs hold mutton snapper, grouper, amberjack, and yellowtail. Half-day trips work well for visiting anglers with limited time.
Bonefish on the Flats
The flats on the southern and eastern sides of New Providence hold solid populations of bonefish. Hire a local guide who knows the tides and channels — this fishery rewards anglers who put in the homework.
Wahoo Trolling
Nassau produces some of the most consistent wahoo fishing in the Bahamas, especially during the fall and winter months when fish stack up along the edges of the Tongue of the Ocean.
Nassau sits on New Providence Island in the northern Bahamas, roughly 185 miles east of Miami. What makes it productive for fishing is simple geography: the island is surrounded by shallow flats on one side and drops into some of the deepest water in the Atlantic — the Tongue of the Ocean — on the other. That combination puts multiple fisheries within reach of a single day trip, which is rare for a destination this accessible.
Offshore, the Tongue of the Ocean is the headline. This narrow, deep trench runs south from Nassau and regularly produces blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. Captains run high-speed trolling spreads along the edges and around current breaks. Wahoo in particular can be exceptional from October through February, and blue marlin show up reliably during summer. You do not need to travel far — most offshore captains are on fish within 20 to 30 minutes of leaving the dock.
On the flats, the fishery is quieter and requires more planning. New Providence has fishable bonefish flats, but they see more pressure than remote out-island destinations like Andros or Abaco. An experienced local guide is not optional here — they know which flats hold fish on a given tide and how to approach skittish fish in clear water. Expect to wade or pole quietly. Permit and small tarpon are occasionally encountered but are not what most anglers come specifically to target.
Nassau works best as either a primary destination for anglers who want convenience and variety, or as a productive add-on if you are already visiting for other reasons. Hotel docks, marina access, and a large fleet of licensed charter captains make logistics straightforward. Seasonality matters — offshore fishing peaks in summer and fall, wahoo peaks in winter, and the flats fish well year-round with spring and fall being the most comfortable weather-wise.
Offshore Trolling
Target blue marlin, white marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi along the Tongue of the Ocean. Full-day and half-day charters available with experienced bluewater captains.
Flats Fishing
Pole or wade New Providence's bonefish flats with a local guide. Light tackle and fly fishing setups both work well for fish in the 3–6 lb range.
Reef and Bottom Fishing
Drop rigs on Nassau's surrounding reefs for mutton snapper, grouper, amberjack, and yellowtail. A reliable option on days when offshore conditions are rough.
Wahoo Fishing
High-speed trolling along the Tongue of the Ocean edges produces consistent wahoo catches, especially October through February.
Fly Fishing
The flats around New Providence are fishable on fly for bonefish. Guide selection is critical — experienced hands know the tides, the fish, and how to set up proper presentations.
Sport Fishing Tournaments
Nassau hosts several offshore tournaments throughout the year targeting marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The Bahamas Wahoo Championship draws serious competitors each winter.
